Short Story

A Squirrel’s Tail is the story of a determined New York City subway rat that takes lessons on ‘How To Become A Squirrel’ from a lazy, ornery Central Park dog. It’s an adventure about friendship and loyalty that demonstrates to young readers that everyone’s unique qualities should be embraced and celebrated, and shows the disastrous results that can occur when we try to be someone we’re not.

I wrote this wonderful children’s story A Squirrel’s Tail. It’s the story of a determined New York City subway rat that takes lessons on ‘How To Become A Squirrel’ from a lazy, ornery Central Park dog. This 25,000-word adventure about friendship and loyalty that demonstrates to young readers that everyone’s unique qualities should be embraced and celebrated, and shows the disastrous results that can occur when we try to be someone we’re not.

Set in New York City, this timeless message of ‘learning to love oneself’ is delivered by a cleverly endearing rodent named Rodney who wishes that he were a lovable squirrel. Day after day, Rodney watches longingly as tourists happily interact with frolicking squirrels in Central Park. When an odd encounter on a subway platform leaves Rodney the unlikely recipient of a squirrel’s tail, he is able to make his wish come true. He wastes little time scampering out of the subway and into Central Park in his new life as a squirrel. When complications, and even danger, result from Rodney’s charade, he eventually accepts that he is no more and no less than a rat, through and through. Rodney’s realization leads him to regain his sense of self worth as he finds himself in the surprising role of hero to a group of squirrels he has befriended.

As a career singer and songwriter, I was inspired to write A Squirrel’s Tail through my involvement with the Songs of Love Foundation for which I have written over four thousand songs for terminally ill children. These extraordinary children love to get lost in pretend but are never happier than when their unique qualities are recognized and celebrated. I am continually touched to recognize this joy and believe that there is no greater gift to a child than to instill the confidence of knowing that he or she is special.
